Aung San Suu Kyi
Followers of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi waited for news of her expected release on Saturday morning, after it was reported that an order to set her free had been signed by Myanmar's ruling junta.

Followers of the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate gathered near her home in Yangon on Saturday morning, eager to see her emerge after seven years of confinement by Myanmar's ruling generals.

A sharply stepped-up security presence was expected on Saturday in Yangon, including truckloads of riot police.

Although the period of her latest detention expires on Saturday, scores of people holding a vigil were disappointed that she was not given an early release on Friday night.

The country's first election in 20 years was held on 7 November, and critics allege it was manipulated to give a pro-military party a sweeping victory.

Results have been released in piecemeal fashion and already have given the junta-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party a majority in both houses of Parliament.
